Who is Hypatia?
Born in 350BC, Hypatia was one of the most influential mathematicians of her time. Outside of mastering mathematics, she was also a well-respected philosopher and astronomer. During her life, she was able to occupy spaces typically reserved for men. As a skilled teacher, she was able to captivate the minds of her students. Many of whom would travel great distances to attend her lectures. As an inventor, she developed a tool sailors used to identify their location in the ocean while traveling. This tool was utilized for 200 years after her death. Born a Pagan in Alexandria, Egypt, she was a witness to the rise of Christianity. Which often included violent clashes between Pagans and Christians. Hypatia worked to bring these communities together by teaching to both Pagans and Christians. She also advised government officials on religious matters, encouraging dialogue between the two groups and preparing influential Alexandrians for the inevitable transition to this new religion. While her brutal death is what she is often remembered for, there is so much more to the life of Hypatia.
